Six hours north of Minneapolis something changes. Yes, you are at the Canadian Border but the land changes as well. It becomes more rugged with even less people. You are leaving the land of 10,000 lakes and entering the land of many, many more. This is Canadian Shield country. From the Manitoba border all the way over to north of Lake Michigan, there is a huge area of wilderness with more lakes than you could ever count, and of course, fish to fill them.Once you have crossed the border, drive another 3 and 1/2 hours and you will arrive in the town of Sioux Lookout (pop. 3,500). This is the base of operations for Slate Falls Outposts, Slate Falls Airways and Red Pine Lodge. Access up to this point has been by paved road but you have pretty much reached the end of the line. The only way to go straight north from here is by float plane. The first 40 miles or so is interspersed with logging roads (our other industry) and from then on you can fly until you reach the next road (somewhere in Russia). This is the Canadian North and where we operate. |
